While it's not technically blogging, I did start sending out a sort of mass e-mail to a group of friends I called "Freethinkers Anonymous" back in 1995, and one of them created a web site and started archiving them. I've been doing it ever since, taking an occasional week off here and there, but probably averaging around forty mini-essays per year.

My more formal blog, started in 2007, began because a friend asked me to help out a start-up internet company some friends of hers were creating. They needed a book/writing/publishing/librarian blogger. Sometimes all this writing really feels like work, but I keep hoping it'll lead to something.

@Damien: 1996 is the year I bought my own computer! It cost about $5000 then!
@Anya: Kids nowadays start really young don't they. I was a bit shocked to find my 8 year old cousin's MySpace account last year! BTW, thanks in advance!
@Claire: -2.5 years? LOL

In the distant 1999, I was among the few teenagers in my small home town (in Russia) who had a wispy clue about the cyberspace existence and its possibilites (I was fifteen back then, and mostly was interested in dating sites). :) Nine years later, that is, in jan 2008, I decided I want to write and created my blog as a starting point.

P.S. I love your history!
P.P.S. As to the vegetarian restaurants in Amsterdam, I'll get back to you with a few suggestions shortly.

What a great little history. I knew you were one of those designer types! I agree that Wordpress and platforms like it are much faster than creating an HTML page. I used to create those much like the way you describe on Geocities back in 1996.
